Following the commercial success of the Multifort TV Big Date and TV 35, Mido unveils a brand-new collection of sporty-chic watches that have all the qualities needed to appeal to a wide audience.
Pierre invites you to discover them now!
Today’s review is aimed at lovers of watches with character who don’t want to mortgage their house to treat themselves!We’re talking about the latest collection to join the Mido catalog: the Multifort 8 Two Crowns.And to accompany the launch, the Swatch Group brand has created a new concept for the occasion: Technometry (with a Y!), which is a mix of GEOMETRY and TECHNOLOGY – they’re fortiches at Mido!
Fans of affordable luxury watches will be familiar with Mido, one of whose hallmarks is its creative capacity.
There are basically two types of watches in the Mido catalog:
– Watches inspired by the brand’s historical models;
– collections created from scratch.
This Multifort 8 is a bit of a cross between the two.
Introducing the Multifort 8 Two Crowns
Indeed, it draws its inspiration from the aesthetics of watches created in the 70s – we’re talking here about the segment of sport-chic steel watches initiated in 1972 with the launch of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak designed by Gérald Genta.
This Multifort 8 Two Crowns is not, however, a contemporary reinterpretation of a Mido watch from the seventies.
On the contrary, it takes over from its predecessors from the early 2000s, the All Dial Diver, the internal rotating bezel system controlled by an additional crown.
Let’s get to the heart of the matter.
Today, Mido unveils a new collection of watches, the Multifort 8, in the form of three variations that differ from one another in the shade of their dials and their straps.
– 1st feature: an octagonal bezel;
– 2nd: an internal bezel driven by an additional crown;
– 3rd: a dial adorned with a horizontal embossed motif;
– 4th: an integrated steel or rubber bracelet;
– 5th: a model featuring caliber 72.
An octagonal bezel
This is probably the most striking feature of the new Mido. It features a cushion-shaped case housing an octagonal bezel.
The upper part, on the face side, features a vertical satin-finish that contrasts beautifully with the mirror-polished finish of its wide bevelled sides.
The whole is very well made, and the Mido watch’s distinctive good looks are also to be found on this Multifort 8, despite a very wise price tag of less than 1250 euros for the most expensive version.
An internal rotating bezel
Rotating bezels first appeared on diver’s watches in the 50s, their graduations allowing the wearer to measure the duration of his or her immersion.
Here, however, we’re talking about an internal rotating bezel, such as those found on the Longines Legend Diver, to stay within the Swatch Group.
Worn on the peripheral flange, it features engraved and painted 60-minute graduations.
It is operated by an additional crown positioned at 2 o’clock.
Screwed in, like the winding crown, they are both shaped like a nut, a shape evoked by the watch’s bezel.
A dial adorned with a horizontal embossed motif
Let’s stay in the world of geometry with a dial enhanced by a horizontal embossed pattern in which the luminescent indexes and date window are cut out. Punctuated by a switch featuring a Super-LumiNova insert, this raised dial combines elegance and functionality.
An integrated steel or rubber bracelet
This is the principle behind the trend launched in 1972 with the Royal Oak, which was to draw in its wake the biggest names in the watchmaking industry: IWC, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Girard-Perregaux… and so on.
The sport-chic watches of this period feature an integrated steel bracelet.
However, Mido chooses, depending on the references, to offer them
on a steel bracelet with butterfly clasp ;
or on a rubber strap with pin buckle.
The brand thus offers us a choice between :
a version with a grey / taupe dial and a steel bracelet ;
a version with a black dial and steel bracelet, with the 2 crowns treated with black PVD ;
a version with a blue dial, blue PVD-treated crowns and a blue rubber strap.
It’s this version that I’ve set my sights on, both because it’s lighter and because it has a sportier look.
72-hour power reserve
This is the Calibre 72 manufactured by ETA, Mido’s sister company within the Swatch Group.
Incidentally, this movement appeared on the Mido Ocean Star 39 launched in June 2024.
This self-winding mechanical movement offers 3 major features:
- 72-hour power reserve, in line with the latest market trend ;
- Nivachron balance-spring for optimized resistance to the influence of magnetic fields;
- thickness of 3.85mm, enabling the Multifort 8 to be just 9.5mm thick, for optimum comfort on the wrist and true sport-chic elegance.
Multifort 8 Two Crowns prices
Mido offers these new models at a price of 1,190 euros on a rubber strap and 1,220 euros on a steel bracelet.
My opinion on the new Multifort 8 Two Crowns
Mido seems to be very inspired these days.
After the Multifort TV Big Date, a huge and well-deserved success, followed by the Multifort TV 35, the brand brings us this Multifort 8 Two Crowns.
While it boasts a trendy aesthetic, it nonetheless displays its own personality with its octagonal bezel with wide mirror-polished bevelled edges, two winding crowns and a raised dial.
Priced at €1,190 on rubber and €1,220 on steel, this new Mido once again offers excellent value for money and has what it takes to be Mido’s new best-seller.
